Support and Training: Sue’s Journey to a New Career

When Sue first connected with the People Hub, she was facing a major life change.

After two and a half years as a Senior Data Analyst for a medical company, she was made redundant. But Sue wasn’t ready to slow down. Despite being in her late fifties, she felt she still had so much to give and wanted to chase her dreams.

Although her former employer had provided some support to help her manage the emotions around redundancy, Sue was incredibly proud of her positive mindset and her determination to move forward. She shared with the People Hub team that she had a strong interest in health and safety and wanted to explore career options in this field. Her ultimate goal was either to set up her own business or find a role as a Health and Safety Manager. To make that happen, Sue needed a key qualification: the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) certificate.

In her initial meeting with Lisa, her People Hub Connector, Sue mapped out a clear plan. Together, they identified the NEBOSH course as a perfect fit for her goals. Sue’s health was also a factor—ongoing lung-related medical investigations meant she needed a course she could manage at her own pace. To ensure Sue didn’t feel overwhelmed, the People Hub helped her create a schedule that balanced her training with her daily routine.

Sue is now making incredible progress through the course and feels she’s learning so much. She’s excited about putting her new knowledge into practice and has already started exploring consultancy opportunities.

“The funding for this course has been such a lifeline,” Sue said. “Being made redundant at 58 isn’t great, and I was worried about finding another job. This course has made me employable as a Health and Safety Consultant. It’s given me a new lease of life, and I’m so grateful to the People Hub for their support and encouragement.”

Sue’s inspiring journey highlights the power of resilience and the right support. With her NEBOSH qualification in sight, she’s ready to launch her career in health and safety, proving that it’s never too late to chase your dreams.
