Despite the upheaval, Olena was determined to rebuild her life and pursue her passion for education.
In Ukraine, Olena had been a qualified teacher. In Cornwall, she knew improving her English would be the first step toward working in education again. That’s where the People Hub and Cornwall Neighbourhoods for Change (CN4C) stepped in. Through CN4C’s Parent Power project, Olena received tailored support to enhance her English skills, digital proficiency and overall wellbeing.
The project provided Olena with a laptop and enrolled her in digital access and English language courses, enabling her to participate in several online programmes. With the help of Cornwall Council’s Resettlement Service, Olena progressed rapidly, building confidence and competence in her new language.
Recognising the importance of physical and mental health, the project funded swimming sessions for Olena and her daughter, securing long-term access to a local pool. These activities became a cornerstone of Olena’s routine, fostering both wellness and joy.
But Olena’s journey wasn’t just about self-improvement—it was also about giving back. Inspired by the support she received, Olena began volunteering with CN4C, preparing community meals and connecting with others. Her dedication earned her a Level 2 Food Hygiene qualification, opening doors to opportunities in catering while she continues her quest to return to teaching.
Through community activities like CN4C’s Magic Food Cupboard and their Summer Programme, Olena found friendship, inclusion and a sense of belonging. Reflecting on her experience, she shared:
“I am very grateful to be part of the People Hub project. It has allowed me to develop important skills, like meeting people and becoming part of the community. My English and computer skills have improved so much, and the laptop has been a huge help for my courses.
“Volunteering has been important because it helps me give back to the community by cooking for people. This project has been life-changing—not only for my mental health but also for my physical health, as swimming has been so important to me.”
As Olena continues her journey, her goals remain clear: to secure employment, further develop her skills and continue giving back to the community that embraced her. Her resilience and determination are a testament to the power of support, community and hope.
Olena’s story is a shining example of how programmes like the People Hub can transform lives, turning challenges into opportunities and dreams into reality.
