Maria’s Journey: Overcoming Challenges and Finding New Purpose

When Maria first reached out to us, she was navigating a challenging phase in her life.

Struggling with low confidence and self-esteem, she was also coping with health issues following cancer treatment. Maria needed support not only to manage her health but also to find new avenues for personal growth and employment. She came to us through a People Hub Connector at the Jobcentre, seeking help to locate a cancer support group and secure a voluntary position to gain new skills.

We connected Maria with The Mustard Tree Group, a local cancer support group that provided her with much-needed therapy and counselling. The sessions have proven to be a lifeline, significantly enhancing her health and well-being and equipping her to handle daily life with renewed resilience.

In addition to this, Maria was offered a voluntary administrative position at the Lostwithiel Community Centre. This opportunity allowed her to gain valuable skills and experience while contributing to her community. Her enthusiasm and dedication have not gone unnoticed; her manager, Kirsty, has expressed how invaluable Maria has become to the team.

Maria’s journey didn’t stop there. She has since taken on additional roles, volunteering with the Plant Shop team and participating in the Growing Project at Duchy Nurseries once a week. Her involvement in these activities has further enriched her life and expanded her horizons.

Reflecting on her journey, Maria shares: “When I met the People Hub at the Jobcentre in St Austell, I was a bit lost. I didn’t know what to do to get out of the house, where to go to try to change my mood and start to be active again. Now I am motivated to go out, I have a reason to get out of the house, and I love the volunteering work I do at the Community Centre and the Plant Shop.”
