James Builds Confidence and Steps Into Work

James joined the programme facing significant personal challenges.

Past convictions had limited his opportunities and knocked his confidence, but he arrived determined to make a fresh start. After finding People Hub he self-referred to Konnect, showing clear motivation to take control of his future.

At the outset James was nervous and withdrawn, yet focused on improving his skills. Over the project he completed four workshops covering resilience, confidence and self-reflection, digital skills and household budgeting. He attended consistently, engaged fully and gradually grew more confident in group discussions. His readiness to encourage others helped create a positive, collaborative atmosphere.

The volunteer team played a key role, offering steady guidance and one-to-one support. Their involvement helped James feel welcome, included and able to push past his initial hesitation.

As the weeks progressed the change in James became clear. He gained confidence, strengthened his practical skills and overcame the anxiety he felt when he first joined. He now contributes openly, supports his peers and approaches challenges with far greater assurance.

James is due to start work soon, a milestone that reflects both his drive and the support he has received. He plans to put his new skills into practice and continue building a stable, sustainable career.

“Prior to my first interaction with Konnect Communities I was filled with unsubstantiated feelings of dread, isolation, nervousness and exclusion. Once sat in a room with my peers all those feelings soon faded away. The other attendees on the course were pleasant, welcoming, non-judgemental and all kind-hearted in nature. From all walks of life, all going through individual barriers and challenging circumstances.

“I have always felt shy in nature and suffered from imposter syndrome which affected my self confidence and how I viewed myself. This course has turned those feelings around.
