From Lifesaving Support to Saving Lives: Alex’s Inspiring Transformation

Meet Alex, a determined individual whose journey took him from uncertainty to a fulfilling career.

After leaving his last job, Alex was feeling lost and lacking purpose. Encouraged by his partner, he turned to The People Hub for guidance and support.

When Alex first arrived at The People Hub, he struggled with low self-esteem, lack of confidence and feelings of isolation. Despite knowing he had much to offer, he needed help to navigate his path. That’s when he met Olie, a dedicated advisor who helped him set and pursue new goals.

Through the People Hub’s support, Alex embarked on an exciting journey to gain Search and Rescue qualifications. He travelled to Southampton, where he earned the prestigious Level 3 Award in Working as a Member of a Recovery Team in Confined Spaces, and a Level 2 Award in Working in High-Risk Confined Spaces. Remarkably, he is believed to be the only person in Cornwall with these life-saving qualifications!

Reflecting on his transformation, Alex said, “The People Hub has changed my life completely. I didn’t know I had an interest and natural ability for emergency treatment. I was flipping between ideas without progress. The support from Olie and the People Hub has opened up so many opportunities for me.”

With newfound skills and confidence, Alex began volunteering as a Community First Responder with Southwest Ambulance Service Trust and as a member of the Mountain Rescue team with East Cornwall Search and Rescue. In this vital role, he has responded to approximately 140 emergency calls, providing life-saving interventions in critical situations.

Alex’s impact is profound. He has assisted in around 17 cardiac arrests, two hypoxic shocks, one cariostatic bleed and two septic shocks. His contributions have included responding to major incidents and even helping during the removal of an unexploded World War II bomb in Plymouth.

Through the incredible support of The People Hub, Alex estimates that he has saved over 20 lives! He is now a beacon of hope, sharing his story at school assemblies to inspire others. Alex bravely discusses overcoming challenges related to his ADHD and autism, illustrating how support can lead to extraordinary achievements.
