Initially referred to KonnectCommunities while receiving assistance from Pentreath under the People Hub project, R had a strong desire to work in the field of mental health and addiction support. However, she faced significant challenges in securing paid employment and needed financial help to pursue the necessary training. Despite her passion and inner resolve, R doubted her academic abilities and worried she might not succeed in a formal study environment.
Thanks to a collaborative effort between Pentreath and Konnect, R received the financial support needed to overcome these barriers. She enrolled in an Access Course, which helped boost her confidence. This newfound belief in her abilities led her to apply for Konnect’s Level 2 Mentoring Skills course. The course, designed with a trauma-informed and inclusive approach, provided R with practical knowledge and skills that aligned with her desire to help others through her lived experiences.
Upon completing the course, R was invited to join Konnect’s Volunteer Team. This opportunity allowed her to gain hands-on experience in mentoring, further building her confidence and practical skills. As fate would have it, a full-time mentoring role at Konnect became available just as R was beginning her volunteer work. Encouraged by her support network, R applied for the position, even though she initially saw it as a learning experience. To her delight, she was not only interviewed but also successfully secured the job.
Today, R thrives in her role, making a significant impact on both her peers and clients. Her journey from a passionate but uncertain individual to a confident mentor highlights the importance of tailored, empathetic support and the transformative power of education and training.
R’s success story doesn’t just end with her employment; it continues to inspire others within the community. Her journey underscores the idea that, with the right support and opportunities, anyone can achieve their career aspirations and make a meaningful difference in their chosen field.
R said: “The Level 2 mentoring course was such a good experience. The process was thoughtfully laid out, allowing ample time for research and application. It equipped me with invaluable listening and observation skills that I have already used in my day-to-day life. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking to gain or enhance mentoring abilities or even just to learn about themselves. There is a mentor in all of us!”
