Forging a New Future: How Dan Transformed His Skills into a Business

After years as a farrier, Dan’s career came to a halt due to a knee injury that affected his mobility.

Struggling with both physical and mental health, he found himself without work and unsure of his next steps. Referred to People Hub specialist partner Cornwall Neighbourhoods for Change (CN4C) by Redruth Job Centre, he set out to rebuild his future.

To support his wellbeing, the project funded swimming sessions—something he loved but could no longer justify financially. With a desire to stay active in his trade, he pursued welding as a way to adapt his skills. Finding the right course was tricky, as it needed to be relevant yet not too physically demanding. A two-day course in Plymouth was identified, and the project covered his travel, accommodation, and protective footwear.

Inspired by the training, Dan became determined to start his own business. He joined a ‘Starting Your Own Enterprise’ course at CN4C and created a social media profile to showcase his work. However, he lacked essential tools. His former colleagues helped by supplying horseshoes and lending tools, but he needed an anvil and forge to expand his craft. The project stepped in, purchasing the equipment so he could create unique items like rings made from horseshoe nails.

To help him market his work, Dan also attended a website-creation workshop. Reflecting on his journey, he shared:

“I started working for my family at 11 and went full-time at 16. I ran my own farrier business for years, but injuries forced me to stop. After losing my job due to an injury, I struggled to see a way forward. Thanks to the People Hub and CN4C, I’ve been able to turn my passion into a business. I’ve always loved welding and working with horseshoes, and now I can make something lasting from it.”
