In March 2024, Olie from the People Hub at Cornwall Council teamed up with St Austell Jobcentre Plus and Cornwall Training & Consultancy to address the construction worker shortage in our area.

Thanks to their collaborative efforts in designing a new course, job seekers Jamie, Viktor, William, Charlie and Joshua embarked on a journey to kick-start their careers in construction.

These dedicated individuals completed a two-day CSCS course, covering essential topics like Level 1 Health & Safety in a Construction Environment, Working at Heights, and Asbestos Awareness. They even gained hands-on experience with Griffiths and participated in interviews with local employers.

All five now hold their CSCS cards, qualifying them to work in the construction sector, and all have gained employment.

Sadie, Director of Engineering and Construction at TR2, shared her excitement:

“As a local Agency, TR2 understands the importance of meeting local job seekers who are looking to get into work. The programme introduced by Cornwall Council, in conjunction with the Jobcentre, gives such huge opportunity to people who wish to get themselves back into the workforce. The added benefit of funding them through the CSCS qualification is such a fantastic way to upskill within the community, as well as giving individuals the confidence and knowledge to start a new role.

TR2 registers many potential workers during our sessions and has even placed people into new roles with clients. This project is an absolute win-win for everyone involved and we are really proud to be a part of it.“

This initiative is a fantastic example of how collaboration and community support can create real opportunities and positive change. Well done to everyone involved!
