Building Confidence to Make a Change

Sometimes a little support and guidance can make all the difference in finding a new path.

One of our participants came to People Hub looking for motivation, resilience and clarity in making positive life choices. Through our Specialist Partner Active Plus he joined the Confidence and Motivation course in Newquay, taking the first step towards a brighter future.

During the course he expressed a strong interest in sailing. This led to discussions about ‘Turn to Starboard,’ a COBSEO-registered charity that uses RYA sailing courses to support those affected by military operations. At the time he was without stable housing and employment, making this an exciting and promising opportunity.

With People Hub’s support he completed the Active Plus Confidence and Motivation course, which helped him overcome personal struggles and gain the drive needed to change his circumstances. We also encouraged him to engage with local veteran communities such as ‘Newquay Surf Vets’ to connect with others who had faced similar challenges.

His journey with Turn to Starboard proved transformative. He secured a place in the programme, moved to Falmouth and found employment. Over time he successfully completed multiple sailing courses, paving the way for a new career and lifestyle. Along the way he built friendships and found a renewed sense of purpose.

Reflecting on his journey he shared:

“I wanted to get into a career in sailing but didn’t have a clue how to do that. I was steered towards ‘Turn to Starboard’ in Falmouth and a few days later they replied and enrolled me onto their Yacht Master Scholarship. I now have my Day Skipper qualification and am currently working on my Coastal Skipper. I just wanted to say a massive thank you to both Active Plus and the People Hub – I cannot thank you enough. I am loving my new life and am pleased to be slowly becoming a sailor. I went from a cave to a tent and now I am living on yachts – all in just over 12 months. So anything is possible!”

This incredible transformation showcases the power of perseverance, community support and the right opportunities. With the help of Active Plus, Turn to Starboard and the People Hub, our participant has not only found a career but a newfound passion for life on the water.
