James is currently living in move-on accommodation as part of his rehabilitation journey.

After years of dealing with alcoholism and a history of offending, he recently reached a significant milestone: six months of sobriety. For him, this marks the start of a more stable and focused chapter.

Keen to make a change, James found Konnect Communities (a People Hub partner) through an online search and reached out. From the start, he showed a clear commitment to improving his circumstances, both personally and professionally.

He began by completing a Level 2 Counselling Skills course, followed by a Level 2 Mentoring Skills course. He became a valued member of the group, contributing thoughtfully to discussions and offering encouragement to others. His willingness to share his own experiences added depth to the sessions and helped create an open, respectful environment.

James stood out for his reflective approach, people skills and ability to support others – traits that suggested a natural aptitude for mentoring. He also joined Konnect’s volunteering programme, attending a session on the criminal justice system.

Although not yet eligible to mentor formally, James has already made a strong contribution. He volunteered to support a staff introduction project by filming and interviewing team members. He handled the task with care and professionalism, helping even the more camera-shy staff feel comfortable. The result was a set of well-made, engaging videos.

Since joining Konnect, James has developed greater confidence and solid skills in communication and mentoring. His involvement has had a positive impact on those around him, and he’s helped foster a sense of peer support within the group.

Looking ahead, James plans to continue his training with the goal of becoming a peer mentor and, eventually, a support worker. His lived experience, combined with his new skills and motivation, puts him in a strong position to support others on their own recovery journeys.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time so far with Konnect and am looking forward to continuing with all they can offer. The mentoring classes and volunteer training were enjoyable and insightful—taught in a fun, light-hearted but professional manner. I felt supported throughout and know the experience and knowledge gained will be a key part of my journey forward. It was a privilege to help with the video interviews, and I’m sure there’s more to come, which I’ll welcome. Konnect also organised a kayaking day, which was absolutely brilliant—a great mental health day at sea, bonding with peers, followed by a BBQ and juggling! My time so far has been amazing, and I look forward to a future with Konnect. I’d like to massively thank everyone who’s been part of my progress—both staff and peers.” – James
